November 2005 Archives

My DIRECTV HD TiVo has died. Less than a year and a half old, some sort of hard drive failure has occurred. Until it is replaced; there are only two TV shows I'll be able to keep up with, thanks to ABC and the iTunes Music Store.

A few months back, when Apple announced it would be moving to Intel chips, there was conjecture that the move could slow Apple's sales until the new machines come out. After all, who wants a computer that's soon going to be obsolete?

Macworld has come out with a full review of the Quad. Good reading. It excels in music and video productions, the two things I am most looking forward to. For other tasks, its not a giant leap. But overall, says the review, it is the biggest jump in Mac performance in years.

"May you live in interesting times." So goes the so-called ancient Chinese curse. These are very interesting times in the television broadcast industry. The field is changing, in much the same way the music industry has changed. At issue: the effects of new models of content distribution.

Quad Benchmarks

Macworld isn't quite as wowed as Computerworld, but the new benchmarks published Friday still impress me. Compressing an MPEG-2 movie was more than two minutes faster than the dual-core 2.3GHz machine. That's a task I'm likely to do regularly.

Computerworld's Yuval Kossovsky got a chance to play with the soon-to-be-mine Mac Quad, and posted a review. I want it even more now. I didn't think that was possible.

My future Mac

Two weeks ago, I ordered the computer of my dreams. It may end up being the ultimate PowerPC Mac, as I'll be surprised if this machine gets surpassed before Apple switches to Intel.

700 Sundays

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of seeing Billy Crystal's 700 Sundays. It is a 3-hour tour-de-force, as Crystal, on stage alone, tells stories about his family and his remarkable childhood.

Introducing myself

Greetings! I'm David Fell, and I'm here to expound on a variety of topics. I am a life-long Chicagoan, and work in the broadcast media. Exactly which part of the broadcast media will not be disclosed on this blog. That's because opinions expressed here are my own, and do not represent those of my employer, my clients, or anyone else. Don't blame my employer.
