I am so freaking excited! Nothing stirs joy in my heart in quite the same way as obtaining a new Macintosh. It's been more than a month since I ordered my Quad G5. The holdup has been my choice of video cards. But I think the logjam has broken free.
When I ordered my computer built to my specs, I was given a "6 to 8 weeks" ship time. And in fact, up through at least the middle of last week, if you were to start ordering a Quad on the online Apple, at first it would show that it would ship in 1 to 2 days. Add some memory or a bigger drive, and it would change to 5-7 days. But if you threw in my video card choice; it would again rocket to 6-8 weeks.
Saturday, I noticed that last thing didn't happen anymore. It stays at 5-7 days! And now there are reports that the computers began shipping last week!
My choice was the NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT. Here's why. The main reason for my new Mac is video production. I can edit now, but not too efficiently. I can't even load Apple's Motion into my current machines. And Motion makes good use of quality video cards.
Three video cards are availble for the new G5s. The base is an NVIDIA GeForce 6600. According to Apple's comparison charts, Motion 2 runs 68% faster on the 7800. The third card available is the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500. It runs only marginally faster than the 7800, but at much greater expense. Another $1300 for a 6% improvement? Not for me.
Still, the Apple web site has my order listed as shipping on or before December 30th. I think, though, that it will ship this week, or next at the latest. And I couldn't be more pumped!
