A few months back, when Apple announced it would be moving to Intel chips, there was conjecture that the move could slow Apple's sales until the new machines come out. After all, who wants a computer that's soon going to be obsolete?

Macworld isn't quite as wowed as Computerworld, but the new benchmarks published Friday still impress me. Compressing an MPEG-2 movie was more than two minutes faster than the dual-core 2.3GHz machine. That's a task I'm likely to do regularly.
Two weeks ago, I ordered the computer of my dreams. It may end up being the ultimate PowerPC Mac, as I'll be surprised if this machine gets surpassed before Apple switches to Intel.
